INTRODUCTION The ecology of York Haven Pond near the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMIh3) has been ur. der investigation since February 1974.
Studies initiated in April 1974 include analysis of ambient water quality, ichthyoplankton (far-field), ichthyoplankton entrainment, macroinvertebrates, fish population dynamics, impingement of fishes, creel survey, and therral plume mapping.
This report discusses the progress of investigations conducted in June 1981.

' COMPLIANCE WITH ENVIR0!MENTAI, TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS (ETS)
Objective: To determine compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental monitoring programs specified in sections 3.1.1.a. (4),
3.1.2.a., 4.2, and 4.6.1 of the ETS and to insure that said programs are performed as detailed in the Generation Procedures Manual.
Progresti: Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Procedures Document was achieved in June (Table 1). The fish population estimate program began on 30 June.
A program by program summary of the progress for June follows.
MACROISVERTEEPA TFS, Objective: To describe the diversity and distribution of the benthic macroinvertebrates occurring at the five benthos sampling stations nenc TMINS.
Progress: Replicate (4', benthos samples were taken on 1 and 15 June (Table 1).
Enumeration, determination of dry weights, and preliminary identification of macroinvertebrates have been completed through
'.5 June.
One replicate sample collected on 15 June became irretrievabic when it was inadvertently dumped into a holding tank. Data from the three remaining replicates will yield satisi etory information for analyses.
ICHTIN0 PLANKTON Objectives:
(1) To determine the species composition, abundance, and distribution of ichthyoplankton in York Haven Pond; and (2) To investigate ichthyoplankton entrained at 'D11NS Unit 1 and 2 Intakes.
Far-Fiel d Progress: Day / night samples were taken on 1, 8, 16, 23, and 29-30 June (Table 1). A total of 7,294 1arvae was taken in 270 samples. Night collections yielded 6,808 specimens (93% of the total catch).

l Er.trainment Progress: Ichthyoplankton surveys were conducted at Units 1 and 2 on 9-10 and 23-24 June (Table 1). At Unit 1, 230 ichthyoplankt' ors i
(148 surface, 82 oblique) wrxe taken on 9-10 June. The 2a-24 June sample yielded 5 specimens (2 surface, 3 oblique).

At Unit 2, 57 ichthyoplanktors (30 surface, 27 oblique) were taken on 9-10 June. The 23-24 June col 1cetion yielded 6 specimens (4 surface, 2 oblique).
1 TRAPNET Objectives:
(1) To determine the distribution and relative abundance of fishes in the Three Mile Island area vulnerable to trapnet; (2) To l
provide specimens for movements studies; (3) To monitor the occurrence of diseased fishes; (4) To provide specimens for radiation analysis; I
and (5) To determine reproductive status for fishes throughout the year.
Progress: Samples were taken on 2-2: and 16-18 June (Table 1). A 1
total of 179 fish of 13 species was taken on 2-4 June (Tabic 2). Most fish (81) and greatest biomass. (31.74 kg) occurred at Station 9B2 while most species (8) were taken at 11A2 and 11A3. The white crappie (40.2%
of the total catch), black crappie (21.2%), and pumpkinseed (16.2%) were One brown bullhead, one channel catfish, and one rock bass were common.

Most fish (91) were caken at Station lA3 and greatest biomass (7.68 kg) at 11A2. Stations 1A3, 11A2,-and 11A3 each had 11 species. The channel i
catfish (54.9% of the total catch) was the most numerous species at all 1

4 stations; most were juvenile from the 1980 spavn. The white crappie (8.1%),
pumpkinseed (7.7%), and rock bass (7.4%) were also common. Five brown bullhead, 4 channel catfish, and 4 rock bass were tagged. Seven, male pumpkinseed and one, male black crappie were ripe. Six white crappie were found dead in trapnets. One channel catfish was parasitized by a leech and one white crappie by an anchor worm.
Dead fishes observed in the study area included 4 common carp, 2 quillback, 1 northern hog sucker, 1 shorthead redhorse, 5 unidentified sucker, 6 channel catfish, 3 rock bass, 1 pumpkinseed, and 25 smallmouth bass. No pattern of parasite infection or dead fishes was observed with i
respect to the location of TMINS in June.
SEINE l
Objectives:
(1) To determine the species composition of fish I
i upstream and downstream from the TMINS Discharge vulnerable to seine; i
(2) To determine the relative condition factor for important species; f
i and (3) To determine the reproductive status of fishes throughout the i
year.
Progress: Collections were made at the 10 stations on 3 and 17 i
June (Table 1). A total of 5,911 fish of 21 species and 1 hybrid was i
taken on 3 June (Table 4).
Most fish (1,275) were taken at station 9B3, j
greatest biomass (452.0 g) at 16A1, and most species (12) at 10B5 and 10A2. The spotfin shiner was the most abundant species at all staticas l
except 9B6, 9B3, and 4A2 and comprised 55.2% of the total catch. The white sucker (17.2%) and tesse11ated dirter (16.8%) were also connon.
Young of the central stoneroller, spottail shiner, longnose dace, fa11 fish, i
f quillback, northern hog sucker, shorthead redhorse, smallmouth bass, tesse11ated darter, and wall tye were taken for the first time this year.

5 Fishes that exhibited slight black spot infestatious were the spotfin shiner (175 specimens), bluntnese minnow (9), golden shiner and tessellated arcer (2 each), and common shiner (1). Two tessellated darter were parasitized by leeches. No pattern of parasite infection was observed with respect to the location of TMIIE.
Collections taken on 17 June are currently being processed; results will be presented in the July progress report.
TMpINGEMENT OF FISH Objectives:
(1) To determine the numbers and species impinged on the river water intake screens; (2) To determine day-night differences in impingement frequency; and (3) To determine the extent of mortality of impinged fish.
Progress:
Impingement surveys were conducted weekly (4-5,10-11, 16-17, 25-26 June) at the TMINS Unit 1 and 2 Intakes (Table 1).
Unit 1 impinged 30 fish of 9 species weighing 28.7 g (Tables 5 thrcagh 12).
Most fish were young and all were dead. Fish numbers were highest during the 16-17 June survey and biomass was highest during the 25-26 June survey. Most fish were collected at 1200 h than during the other survey periods. The estimated hapingement for Unit 1 for June was 225 fish weighing 215.2 g (0.5 lb).
j Unit 2 impinged 3'.7 fish of 14 species weighing 426.8 g (Tables 13 through 20). Most fish were young and dead.
Tish numbers and biomass were highest during the 16-17 June survey. The estimated impingement for June for Unit 2 was 2,378 fish weighing 3,201.0 g (7.0 lb).
The total estimated impingement at TMINS during June was 2,603 fish weighing 3,416.2 g (7.5 lb).
l ELECTROFISHING l
Objectives:
(1) To provide specimens for radiation analysis and movements studies; and (2) To determine the relative abundance of fishes vulnerabic to electrofishing in various parts of York Haven Pond.

Progress: Sampling was conducted on four nights in June (Table 1).
Twenty-four collections in 12 zones yielded 566 specimens of 18 species j
(Table 21). The smallmouth bass (245 specimens), quillback (91), and pumpkinseed (55) were most abundant.
A total of 85 fish was tagged for movements studies and four smallmouth bass from areas below the TMINS Discharge were sacrificed for radfation analysis.
JjoVEMENTS OF FISHES Objective: To determine if fishes in waters receiving the TMINS effluent mix with fishes from other areas.
Progress: A total of 106 fish was tagged and eight previously tagged fish were recaptured in June. Recaptured fishes included the brown bullhead (1 specimen), rock bass (6), and smallmouth bass (1).
The brown bullhead made a 1.0 km complex movement. Three rock bass moved upstream distances of 14.1 to 18.2 km, one made a 1.5 km complex ws movement, and two were recaptured in the same areas in which they were tagged. The sm^.11 mouth bass moved 61.9 km upstream.
A CREEL SURVEYS Objectives:
(1) To determine the extent and success of sport fishing; and (2) To determine informattaa on angler residence and use of catch.
Progress: Creel surveys were conducted in all areas on 3,15, 21, and 27 June (Table 1). The 400 anglers interviewed fished 695.05 hours5.787037e-5 days <br />0.00139 hours <br />8.267196e-6 weeks <br />1.9025e-6 months <br /> and caught 995 fish (Tables 22 through 25). The actual harvest was 188 fish or 18.9% of the total catch. The mean catch per effort (c/e) was 1.43.
Most anglers (155) vere recorded at the General Reservoir. The largest total catch (473) and highest mean c/e (3.68) occurred at the West Dam. Most fish harvested (85) were recorded at the York Haven Generating Station.
7 rma11 mouth bass (385 specimens) were caught in greatest numbers.
Other common species included the channel cat,'ish (212), walleye (188),
rock bass (106), and sunfishes (45).
Approximately 71% of the anglers lived in York or Dauphin counties.
Most of the anglers reported they eat some of their catch.
AMBIENT WATER QUALITY Objective: To determine concentrations of selected water quality parameters in ambient river areas and the TMINS effluent, j
Progress: Water quality samples were collected on 2 and 15. June

at the five river statione (Table 1).
Data were analyzed and tabulated; results are presented in Table 26.
On 2 June values for sulfate, dissolved copper, and total zine were highest at Station lAl (located i
upstream from the TMINS Discharge). Alkalinity and total copper values i
i were highest at Stations 11A1 and 9B1, respectively.
On 15 June values for dissolved zine (11A1), sulfate and total copper (11A2), and water temperature and total dissolved solids (931) were i
highest at stations located at or downstream from the Discharge.

Parameters, for which State water quality criteria have been established, 1
