Subject:
Detroit Edison Response to NRC IE Bulletin 81-02
Dear Mr. Keppler:
The Project Engineering Organization (PEO) for the Enrico fermi Power Plant, Unit 2, has reviewed the unit's safety-related systems for any applications of certain categories of valves described in the subject Bulletin.
The PE0 has ascertained that none of the "affected" valves are, or will be installed, or maintained as spares for installation.
This determination was based on the fact that PE0 has conducted an extensive review of Nuclear Safety Related valves, both directly purchased and vendor supplied " skid mounted" valves - to determine if the Fermi 2 Project has installed, or plans to install, any of the "affected" valve types, identified in the subject NRC bulletin.
These "affected" valve types are valves supplied by Westinghouse or Borg-Warne r.
All valves for the total plant which have been docunented and entered in the Master Valve List have been reviewed. Also, as part of a past response to the NRC-IE Bulletin 80-21, a listing of Fermi 2's safety-related valve vendors, and vendors of GE supplied valves for the NSSS was provided.
This listing was also reviewed for the purposes of the subject bulletin.
In addition, the safety-related " skid mounted" equipment was reviewed for the "affected valves" (except for GE's supplied valves - which were included in the above review).
N0lE: " skid mounted" is the generic term for an assembly of equipment shipped from a manufacturer containing integrated mechanical, electrical and control equipment.

n Mr. Janos G. Keppler July 13, 1981 Page 2 EF2-54014 for all the cases nontioned above, the "affected" valve types were neither identified nor included.
From this review, PE0 has determined that the Fermi 2 Unit does not use any of the "affected" valve types.
At this tine it is not possible to rule out the possibility of eventually finding one "affected" valve, but it is extrencly unlikely that one will be found.
In the event that we should locate one at a later date, it will be reviewed for modification or mplacement per IE Bulletin 81-02.
This letter constitutes the Company's final report on IE Bulletin 81-02.
Should you require additional information from Detroit Edison in this matter, please advise us.
Very truly yours, b
