Subject:
Interim Report of 10CFR50.55(e) Item on Non-Seismic Equipmnt Over Seismic (#26)
Dear Mr. Keppler:
The final report on the Non-Seismic Equipmnt over wismic problem cannot be submitted to you by July 14, 1981, as schedt led. This additional interim report is to provide you with the current status of the evaluation of this problem.
The problem was originally reported to Mr. J. Konklin of NRC-Region III by Mr. R.W. Barr, Detroit Edison Project Quality Assurance Director, by telephone on January 18, 1980. It had been noted, at that time, that non-seismic equipmnt was erected over and/or in close proximity to safety re-lated equipent.
Edison Engineering had identified the affected equignent as non-seismic pieces of HVAC duct located in the Reactor and Auxiliary Buildings. The problem did not exist in une RHR cmplex, as all HVAC duct work there has been seismically designed; nor does it exist in other Fermi 2 buildings such as the Turbine or Radwaste Buildings, as no safety related equipmnt is located there.
A redesign of supports in the problem areas will be necessary. A contr:tct to do this work has been awarded to Giffels Associates, Inc. Giffels l' fresently conducting a study on the ducts, and an actual reanalysis of duct hangers will be started in July. Where electrical cable trays are involved Sargent and Lundy is performing the work under existing contracts. After the redesign is empleted the required construction work will be scheduled as construction schedules allow.
Another raport on this item, either interim or final, is scheduled to be sent to you on or before November 11, 1981. If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact Mr. H.A. Walker, Supervisor-Construction Quality Assurance.
Very truly yours,
