" Flow Blockage of Cooling Water to Safety System Components by CORBICULA SP. (Asiatic Clam) and MYTILUS SP. (Mus sel) ".
Gentlemen:
Ohio River Surveys taken in 1979 and 1980 near Beaver Valley Power Station - Unit No. 2 indicate no presence of CORBICULA SP. ( Asiatic Clam).
The MYTILUS SP. is a salt water species not applicable to the Ohio River.
Surveys were conducted in February (winter), May (spring),
and September (summer-fall) of 1980.
For each survey, three ponar samples were taken at mid-river and both river banks to characterize the benthic macroinvertebrate community of which the CORBICULA SP. belong. Sample location details and listings of other macroinvertebrate found is in the Duquesne Light Company Annual Ecological Report (Non-Radiological).
Previous ecological reports did indicate an increase of C dBICULA SP. from 1975 through 1976 but, a decline in 1977 and 1978.
Future Ecological Reports will continue to monitor for CORBICULA SP. in the Ohio River near Beaver Valley Power Station - Unit No.
2.
Since BVPS - Unit No. 2 is still under construction and no CORBICULA SP. we re found it is not possible to determine whether system infestation will occur.
- However, we will continue to monitor system operations at the adjacent BVPS - Unit No. 1 which could be affected by CORBICULA SP.
( Asiatic Clam).
