Dear Mr. MacDonald:
N 3
_~
This letter is concerned with Schlum e r s need to extend the B(U) Certification granted earlier to include two additional styles of the neutron source systems NLS.
Model designations are:
NLS-RF (Granted 1/24/79)
NLS-KL (New Suomission)
NLS-LM (New Submission)
One copy of our document has been sent to Mr. Richard Rawl at the D.O.T.
In this amended version of our original document, relevant paragraphs taken from IAEA 1973 are followed by arguments to demonstrate compliance. A bibliography supports the arguments.
Additional prints of key drawings are furnished loose in the back cover pocket.
You will find that the two additional styles are manufactured using our previously described techniques. The systems differ only in size of the welded source assembly NSR and pressure vessel NPV.
All carrying shields, NCS, are identical e ?pt for inner spacers necessary to accommodate the various pressure vessel styles. Sources differ in specified radioactive content, which will not exceed 25 Ci.
The attention that you, and others in your group have given is very much appreciated.
You have been very helpfulin this work.
If there is need for further information, please contact C. E. Raester (713-928-4227) or me (713-928-4631).

Dear Mr. Rawl:
On January 24,1981, the Nuclear Regulatory Commissien informed us of their conclusion that "-package (Model NLS-RF) authorized by NRC Certificate of Compliance No. 9088 meets the IAEA requirements for Type B(U) packages when used with the AmBe neutron source container shown on drawings H-142108, Rev. B; 11-136038, Rev. C and 11-126024, Rev. O."
Attached to this letter is an amended version of our original document as submitted to the NRC on this date. The purpose is to request extension of the B(U) certification to include two additional styles of the neutron source system NLS. Model designations are:
NLS-RF (Granted 1-24-79)
NLS-KL (New Submission)
NLS-LM (New Submission)
All are o anufactured using the previously described techniques. The systens differ only in size of the welded source assembly, NSR and pressure vessel NPV. Ah carrying shields, NCS, are identical except for inner spacers necessary to accommodate the several pressure vessel styles. Sources differ in specified radioactive content which will not exceed 25 Ci.
We request that you issue an ammended IAEA Certificate of Competent Authority, referencing the 1973 IAEA Safety Series No. 6, to extend NLS-RF B(U) approval (granted January 24,1979) to include also NSR-KL, and NSR-LM.
Presented here are engineering drawings, results of our experiments, and calculations aimed at proving that these several versions comply with the type B(U) requirements.
Please advise us if additionalinformation is needed.
Yours very truly, o
