Description of Packaging (common name - Krypton Shipping Container)

(1)

Outer Packaging (thermal shield)

( a)

End-loading cylindrical thermal shield consisting of concentric inner and outer steel walls (16 gage c.h) 6" apart, filled with high-temperature resistant (to 2,200 ) phenolic foam plastic and longitudinal oak stringers at 9 intervals.

(b)

Closed by 1/2" steel plate bolted to flanged inner steel wall with six 1/2" bolts. Outer cover (phenolic foam filled to 5-3/8")

attached with six 3/4" bolts torqued to 30 ft. lbs.

(c)

Exterior dimensions:

Thermal shield 83-1/2" long, 30" diameter, with metal framework (2" schedule 40 pipe) which measures 69-3/4" long and 30-1/4" wide.

Framework used for lifting and tie-down purposes.

(d)

Metal identification plate with container nomenclature, serial number, quantity of radioactivity. and name and address of owner.

Inner Packaging

( a)

Radiation Shield Container I.

End-loading cylindrical steel-encases (1/4") lead (2" thick) shield with 3 steel-encased plugs for loading, valve access, and access to gas cylinder retaining steel band.

Closure by retention of end shielding plug with clamp (11" x 4-1/2")

held in place by two 5/8" set screws.

Gas Cylinder Primary containment by DOT Specification 3A or 3AA gas cylinder (length 52" and outside diameter of 9") rated to 2015 psig.

Cylinders to be certified at least once every 5 years by testing to 3360 psig.

Closure Valves 1.

Kerotest Valve - special high temperature monel valve (#440 x 70),

Kerotest Mfg. Corporation, 2525 Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA.,

15222. Valve measures 4-5/8" with a torque of 90 in. lbs. for closure.

NUPRO Bellows Valve - special high temperature valve (series T),

NUPRO Co., 4800 East 345 St., Willoughby, Ohio, 44090. Valve measures 4" with a minimum torque of 50 in, lbs.

(increased torque may be required to assure leak tightness).

5.b. Authorized Contents Gaseous krypton-85 (Transport Group III) in large quantities, not to exceed:

(1) 74,000 curies (2) 1000 BTU /hr decay heat (293 watts)

(3) 500 psig gas cylinder pressure.

5.c. Leak Testing (1)

Each packaging, before first use; and siter every third use, or within the 12 months preceding any use, whichever comes first, shall be leak tested using a method capable of demonstrating that the maximum gas le k containment vessel and closure valve is less than 1 x 10~f age raj/sec.e from the primac atm-cm (2)

Prior to shipping, the primary containment vessel and closure valve shall be leak tested using a method capable of demonstrating that the maximun krypton-85 gas leakage rate from the vessel and valve is less than 0.278 uCi/sec. under "as-loaded" conditions.
