PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PN0-IV-81-18 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or pufilic interest significance.

The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by lE staff on this date.

Wichita, ransas Wolf Creek Generating Station DN 50-482

SUBJECT:

INJURY OF PERSONNEL DUE TO EXPLOSION OF WATER TANK Two workmen were injured by the explosion of a water tank at the Wolf Creek site which occurred at approximately 11:00 a.m., July 10,1981.

Paint fumes inside the tank apparently ignited during painting operations.

A workman inside the tank received extensive burns and a workman on top of the tank received some physical injuries.

Both workmen were taken to the local Burlington Hospital for medical treatment. The burned workman was later transferred to the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City for further treatment of his burns. The workman on top of the tank was later admitted to the Coffey County Hospital for observation. The full extent of the injuries to both workman is unknown at this time.

The water tank involved is non safety-related and is intended for storage of water for general plant use. The top of the tank was blown off by the force of the explosion which was audible over a wide area.

No safety-related equipment was affected by the accident.

The local news media (Burlington Daily Republican) is aware of the accident.
