Dear Dr. Uogman:

PDR JBHartin WKerr SP BPFisher I have rcviewed your monthly report for the Edgemont Cleanup Action Program (B-2217) for April 1981, and have the following coments which were discussed 91th you on May 27, 1981:

1.

Continue the RPISU measurements and the Track Etch cross-calibration study as indicated in your report.

2.

The Engineering Assessments (EA) for the 125 properties which 5. ave been identified as exceeding the EPA's remedial action critert:

'i.e.,

40 CFR 192) should be completed as soon as possible. See item 4 of my March 10, 1981 letter to you regarding EA reporting requirements.

3. It is particularly distressing that about 50% of the residence units surveyed to date will require the long-term RPISU measurements. As previously discussed, it is essential that we develop a new survey protocol

to locate residual radioactivity at a property". Such a survey will eliminate the need to measure the Working Level (or ambient radon gas levels) inside a structure since the physical removal of the identified elevated residual radioactivity will obviously eliminate the radon gas source term.

Your draft survey protocol is due no later than June 15, 1981, for our review and approval.

All other aspects of your April 1981 monthly report were adequate. Should you have any questions regarding these coments, please contact me at (301) 427-4541.
