Dear Mr. Keppler:

Refe)en'ce(b)providedtheCommonwealthEdisonCompany response to the subject Bulletin for our Dresden, Quad Cities, LaSalle Caunty and Zion Stations. The attachment to this letter provides the Reference (a) requested information for our Byron and Braidwood Stations.

The attached report identifies t'.e affected valves, their planned service, the maximum differential pressure at which these valves would be required to close, the saf'ety consequences of the valve's failure to close and the planned corrective action.

A schedule for implementing the corrective action is expected from Westinghouse in the near future. Our schedule for completing this corrective action is January 1, 1982.

Our estimate of the hours expended in the review and preparation of the enclosed Byron and Braidwood report is eight hours. This does not, however, account for the Westinghouse efforts expended on this matter. Additionally, it is expected to require eighteen hours per unit to implement the corrective action.

Valves RV8000 A & B PORV Block %400 psi Gear Ratio Change The failure of a PORV to Valves close, assuining no block valve, is an analyzed condition (WCAP9600). Core uncovery will not occur.

4GM87 SI8821 A & B SI Pomp 1500 psig Gear Ratio Change This is a normally open Discharge valve and is not required X-Over to close under accident Isolation c o n d i t i o r.s .

4GM88 SI8802 A & B SI Pump Hot 1200 psi None* The failure of these valves Leg Recirc. to close would result in a Isolatio,n reduced cold leg injection flow not analyzed in the FSAR. However these valves are normally closed.

SI8801 A & B SI Pump Cold 1200 psi None* This is a normally closed Leg Injection valve and is required to Isolation open udder accident conditions.

I l SI8835 SI Pump 1200 psi None* This is a normally open Header valve and is not required Isolation to close under accident conditions.

SI8803 A & B Not used at Byron /Braidwood

• Westinghouse has determined that these valves are adequate as designed.
