GLEN ELLYN, ILLINolS 60137 guf June 30, 1981 Mr. Robert M. Quillin, CllP Radiological IIcalth Program Director Ohio Department of llealth 246 North IIigh Street P.O. Box 118 Columbus, Ohio 43216

Dear Bob:

This is in response to your letter dated June 19, 1981 in which you raised several questions on different issues.

The Low Level Radiological Waste Regional Workshop, sponsored by the National Conference of State Legislatures and held in Dearborn from June 18 through June 20, 1981 was very productive.

Representatives of the governors of the six Great Lake states, including Ohio, have agreed to meet in August, 1981 to discuss the form of a compact, the number and type of sites needed for the region, and other issues.

Bill Taylor of Michigan is considered a key person in the development of a regional compact.

The program presented general information regarding waste management issues and workshops were conducted on interstate compacts, low-level waste issues, transportation and regulations and a review of national strategy. Approximately forty representatives including state officials and legislators from the Great Lake states plus representatives of the Energy Department, National Governors' Association, State Planning Council, EG&G Idaho, and other states were in attendance.

Regarding the Grandview llospital civil penalty, presently we are unable to release to the public the investigation report because the licensee has requested an extension in time for their proprietary review.

An extension of twenty-five days through July 5,1981 has been granted by NRC lleadquarters.

A copy will be forwarded to you when released.

Public reaction regarding the civil penalty was not significant.
