o Description of Proposed Auxiliary feedwater System l'odifications The attached sketches provide proposed modifications to the present design of the Farley fluclear Plant Auxiliary Feedwater System. The purpose of these modifications is to provide a design which addresses the flRC concerns stated in Enclosure 2 to the flRC letter to APCo, dated flovember 5, 1980. The following item numbers correspond to the fiRC position numbers as presented in the referenced flRC letter: 1. The !?RC has expressed concern that the present design has no provision to automatically fully open the motor driven auxiliary feedwater pump discharge valves in response to some of the Auxiliary feedwater System automatic initiation signals when the valve control switches are in tne modulate position. As a result of this concern the flRC has requested that the design be modified such that all automatic signals shown in Figure 7.2-14 of the FSAR automatically open the subject valves, regardless of the position of the associated control switches. The proposed design modifications shown in the attached sketches allow the motor driven auxiliary feedwater pump discharge valves to auto-matically fully open in response to all of the Auxiliary Feedwater System automatic initiation signals shown in Figure 7.2-14 of the FSAR, regardless of the position of the valve control switches. 2&3. The flRC has further expressed concern that the redundant solenoid valves in the control air lines to the auxiliary feedwater pump discharge valves are presently arranged to be " energized" to close or modulate and "de-energized" to open the discharge valves. In addition the f4RC has expressed concern that all manual control stations for both motor and turbine driven pump discharge valves are presently powered from a single train power source. The loss of either of the power supplies will result in the fully opening of all of the subject discharge valves and preclude their capability to regulate flow. As a result of this concern the f1RC has requested that the design be modified such that the loss of a single train power supply will not cause all the pump dischsrge valves to open, nor preclude their capability to regulate flow from both of the redundant sources of AFW. Specifically the manual control stations for the turbine driven discharge valves should be powered from the same source used to derive power for the turbine driven pump steam admission valves and related controls. For the motor driven pump discharge valves, the proposed design modi-fications shown in the attached sketches replaces the existing redundant solenoid valves in the control air lines with solenoid valves required to be " energized" to open and "de-energized" to close or modulate. For the turbine driven pump discharge valves, the proposed design modifications replace the existing redundant solenoid valves in the control air li: -
- each discharge valve with only one solenoid valve required to be " energized" to open and "de-energized" to close or modulate.
The new solenoid valve, as well as the remaining existing solenoid valve in the air line of each discharge valve associated with the turbine driven pump will be powered from an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which also is the source of power for the turbine

In addition,.the present power source for the manual control stations of the turbine driven pump discharge valves is being replaced with a UPS. These modifications make the entire operation of the turbine driven pump and its associated steam admission and. discharge valves dependent on the UPS for power. As a result some circuits and control stations will be relocated for separation purposes. The above modifications to the solenoid valves and the power supplies will prevent the loss of a single power supply from causing all the auxiliary feedwater pump discharge valves to open, and from precluding their capability to regulate flow from both of the redundant sources of AFW. 4. The proposed design modification which addresses the NRC concern regarding the accumulator air supply for the turbine driven auxiliary feedwater pump steam admission valves is shown on attached sheet No. 13. The proposed design uses a check valve and solenoid valve to provide diversity of isolation. The solenoid valve and check valve have been relocated outside the main steam ~ room to improve accessibility for periodic testing. Test connections have been added to allow individual operability checks of check valve and solenoid valve. The check valve is soft seated as required by Bulletin 80-01. The check valve, pressure switches, and solenoid valve are seismic Class 1. The design basis for the air accumulators is to provide sufficient capacity to open the valves and allow turbine operation for two hours. The design basis, for the accumulator air supply is to provide redundant backfica prevention between the safety related air accumulator and non safety. instrument air system. The spring loaded check valve provides isolation whenever instrument air pressure falls below accumulator pressure and'is the primary protection for the rapid depressurization event. The solenoid valve provides isolation whenever instrument air pressure falls below the pressure switch setpoint. The pressure switch is to be set at 80 psig to provide isolation for the slow depressurization event. An alarm is provided to alert the operatoi to low pressure in the accumulators. The air isolation solenoid valve will-be powered from a UPS. i k
