JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT - UNITS 1 AND 2 AUTOMATIC TRIP 0F REACTOR COOLANT PUMPS DURING LOSS-0F-COOLANT ACCIDENT Gentlemen:
Item II.K.3.5 of NUREG-0737 requires Alabama Power Company, prior to July 1,1981, to propose design modifications for the RCP trip based upon the NRC determination of the acceptability of the W.0.G. Small Break mcdel. As of this date, the NRC has yet to make that determination (originally scheduled to have been completed by April 1,1981).
In addition, the Farley Nuclear Plant Unit 2 Full Power License provides that "this submittal is required within three months after NRC deter-mination of acceptability of the small-break LOCA Model."
The Westinghouse Owners Group, of which Alabama Power Company is a member, submitted additional information to the NRC on June 15, 1981 as requested by the letter from P. S. Check (NRC) to R. W. Jurgensen (W.0.G.
Chairman) dated May 30, 1981. As stated in this letter, it is expected that the NRC will issue a formal letter to Westinghouse and the Westinghouse Owr.ars Group stating that the small-break LOCA model has been found to be acceptable and notify the utilities if automatic RCP trip modification design submittals are required to be made.
It is Alabama Power Company's intention to supply the modificatic 1 design information for Units 1 and 2 within three (3) months of formal NRC notification that automatic RCP trip design modifications are required.
No equipmer.t will be ordered until after the above notification is made.
