At approximately 7:00 p.m., May 6,1981 an individual, escaping from an anch -
robbery that took place in Central Square in Cambridge, Mass., took refuge in a building outside of the designated restricted area boundary of the MIT Reactor Research Facility.
Local authorities were in pursuit of the individual and followed the suspect to the building complex that is adjacent.to the reactor building. The campus police aided the local authorities in the subsequent arrest of the unarmed suspect. Neither the barrier of the restricted area nor the reactor building were compromised.
Media interest is expected. The Cocronwealth of Massachusetts has been notified.
No press release is planned by either the licensee or the NRC at this time.
The IAT has been advised.
This Preliminary Notification is issued for information only and no further action by IE is anticipated.
NRC Region I (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence from the licensee by telephone at 11:15 p.m. on May 6,1981.
Information was verified with the licensee-at 10:30 a.m., May 7,1981.
