SUBJECT:

MCAR 42 (Issued 9/24/80) 02539i Loose Hanger Standard Parts Bushings INTERIM REPORT 4 DATE:

March 26, 1981 PROJECT:

Consumers Power Company Midland Plant Units 1 and 2 Bechtel Job 7220 Status of Corrective Action and Investigation The status of actions in progress for resolving the management correc-tive action report (MCAR) is as follows:

1.

Corner and Lada, Inc. has submitted an alternative fix to the staking procedure previously submitted which involves using spacers as requested. Corner and Lada, Inc. stated its product warranty will remain in effect using the appropriate sized spacer / washer for its sway struts. Corner and Lada Inc. have not yet provided (as requested) sufficient infomation to perfom a complete dimensional analysis using spacers. Required infomation has again been re-quested from Corner and Lada, Inc.

2.

NPS Industries, Inc. submitted its recommendation that installing a flexible bearing retainer with the spacers / washers would be an acceptable alternative to staking. NPS Industries, Inc. did not provide specific infomation concerning size and material for the flexible bearing retainer data on the spacer / washer sizes for dimensional analysis acceptance. Bechtel is continuing to pursue NPS Industries, Inc. for this infomation.

3.

Bergen-Paterson Pipc Support Corp. provided infomation required to do a dimensional analysis for using washers to prevent complete bushing dislodgement. Investigation indicates that the Bergen-Paterson bushings will not become totally dislodged if its recom-mended size washers are installed.

4.

Grinnell had previously agreed that the use of spacers was acceptable and has provided Bechtel with spacer sizes and bearing movement necessary for dimensional analysis. Investigation indicates that of all size sway struts and mechanical shock arrestors provided by Grinnell, only one mechanical shock arrestor (Figure 306/307, Size

1) can dislodge from its bushing. Grinnell indicated this is a remote possibility and did not recommend any additional remedial action other than restaking. Bechtel is investigating the accepta-bility of Grinnell's resolution.

The next report on this subject is scheduled for May 29, 1981.
