LaSalle County Station Unit 2 Electrical Penetratica - 10 CFR 50.55(e)

Interim Report NRC Occket No. 50-374 Reference (a):

L. O. DelGeorge letter to J.

G. Koppler dateo October 20, 1960.

Dear Mr. Keppler:

As was indicated in Reference (a). Commonwealth Edison is reviewing a deficiency involving insulator cracks on the epoxy mooule portion of the Amphenol Sams electrical penetrations on LaSalle County Unit 2.

This deficiency does not exist on LaSalle County Unit 1 for which all electrical penetrations were manufactured by Conax and are not susceptible to the same insulator cracking.

Based on aucits conducted by Commonwealth Edison the week of February 12, 1981, the status of resolution of this deficiency is discussed below:

(1) Pre-Crimoed Penetration Modules The re-work of the " pre-crimped" penetration mooules is in j

progress in accordance with the manufacturer's proceoure.

This procedure requires that all modules be removed from the header plates, pig tails ce identifieo and cut to a workable length, shrink tube (second layer) be applied to conductors on both sides of the epoxy module.

Pig tail length of conductors will be spliced and insulated to the modules and the modules reinstalled in the header plates.

This work is more than 30%

done at this time.

Penetration assemblies of tnis type are expected to be returned to the site.

(2) Post-Crimoed Penetration Modules (a)

Alechcl bath testing for insulation resistance are being employed to identify breecnes in insulation, if any.

None had been found at tne time of the audit.

x;r7,10612 0%will be conducted to further investigate this design 2

(b)

No date for the completion of the engineering evaluation ano rework if necessary has been establisheo at this time.

advise you of the progress of the review ano reworkA supplemental r event you have any questions in this regard, please direct them to program.
