September 16, 1980 thru September 22, 1980; Edgemont, SD Purcose-To initiate the Edgemont Cleanup Action Program (B-2217).
Discussion i
Gregory Eadie met with personnel from the Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories (BPNL) in Edgemont, South Dakota on September 16, 1980, to initiate the actual work on the Edriemont Cleanup Action Program.
The mobile counting laboratory for. conducting grab Working Level measurements was made operational, and the soil sample analysis system was also set up at the hospital. Three homes were surveyed and found to be acceptable under the NRC/ State (HUD) protocol.
The Edgemont _ school grounds were thoroughly surveyed and no significant radiation levels above background were found.
Two continuous radon monitors were placed in operation, one at the NU end of town and another at the sewage pumping station nearby the tailings pile, in order to monitor the radon levels across the town.
About 367 homes have requested that NRC perform the radiological surveys, and the BPNL work team is systematically conducting the necessary surveys at this time.
