APPE: DIX 5H LJ REACTCR EUILDING IDAD RESP 0ISE TEST The purpose of instrumenting and testing the structure of a prestressed concrete reactor building is to provide a =eans for cc= paring the actual response of the structure to the loads induced during post-tensiccing and pressure testing with the predictions of the lesign calculations.

If the response is as predicted, che design techniques are assured to have been verified.

The reactor building is very similar to previous structures such as the Palisades, Turkey Point, and Oconee structures. The design and construc-tion are si=ilar. The structures for Palisades and Turkey Point were cct-pletely instru=ented. The Turkey Point instruments provided approx 1=ately LCO strain reasurements at 55 locations throughout the structure and liner.

In addition, about 25 eptical =easure=ents of structural defor=ation were cade. The Palisades and Oconee instru=entation is cc= parable. This a= cunt of data per=its a detailed compariscn between design calculatiens and cbserved response. The basic structural response and the accuracy of the calculation procedures used by Bechtel is, therefore, verified by these tests.

Since the above detailed confir=ation of the design' techniques is available, instru=entation of the Midland structure is not conte = plated.

hf Optical =easure=ent of the reactor building structural response is =ede as follows: The required level of structural prestress is obtained by jacking the post-tensioning tendons.

Pricr to reactor fuel loading and operation, the integrity of the reactor building is demonstrated by a pressure proof test. The post-tensioning and the pressure test per=its verification that the structural response due to the induced leads is consistent with the predicted behavior. This is accer-plished by optical reasure=ents of the structure's defor=atica using a surveycr's theodolite.

The =easure=ent technique requires attaching targets to the surface of the reactor building at appropriate elevaticus and acinuths and around the access openings. It is expected that =easure=ents of displace =ent to within.01 inch can be =ade.

Figure 5-H-1, " Reactor Building Test Instru=entation," indicates the targets for =easuring shell deflections both vertical and radial and at the opening. The syste= for =easuring these deflections is also shown. These deflections, in turn, are correlated with reasure=ents made on the Palisades and Turkey Point reactor buildings for verification of structural behavior.

The intended progra of reactor building proof testing is given in 5 1.4.

The proof testing of each tendon is achieved at the time of pcst-tensioning when the tenden is stressed to the =axd=u= value occurring during its life.
