AREA 4
n Attached is Region I. Report No. 078-154 regarding. radiation surveys and sample analyses associated with our investigation of allegations that radioactive enterial was buried in certain ' andff11 sites in the.1orton/

Massachusetts personnel, redicactive material was,'in fact, found at two locations. One location in'Norton was.found to have material (uranium)
(
subject to 00E er.HRC. regulatory control. The other locationg,in Attleboro, i
l was found to.contain redoom only (not subject, to NMC regulatory control),
l I
for which the state of Massachusetts has assumed ibility. The l
investigation into the source of material found in Novem site is continuing and will be the sehject of a saperater report.. As of. February 1
L 27,1979 the source of the esterial has not beam' established..". a As pmviously discussed with the Headquarters staff,,in order to assure I
there are no other locations in the Norton/Attlebore area where radioactive material may have been deposited, we request a detailed Aerial Monitoring System (AMS) overflight of the Norton/Attleboro, Massachusetts area. We L
reccamend the overflight be performed in early spring after the snow cover is gone and be made by helicopter to maximize sensitivity. We believe this flight should be given priertty over routinely scheduled flights.
As you recognize there art tuo subjects that need 1sendiate Headquarters attention. These are:
1.
Informing the City of Norton of the present status of the situation and what they can expect in terus of twsolution.-
2.
Release of the attached report to the public.
We can expect requests for both items 1 and 2 before long. We request
,f prompt Headquarters guidance on these two items.
