SUBJECT:

MEETING ON THE CIMARR0N SITE On February 7,1990, we met with representatives from Kerr.McGee Corporation regarding the status of the Cimirron, Oklahoma and Cushing, Oklahoma sites. A list of meeting attendees is enclosed. The discussions about Cushing are covered in a separate memorandum.

Edwin Still, of Kerr-McGee Corporation, reviewed progress in surveying the Cimarron site for uranium contamination.

In our last meeting (December 1, 1989) with Kerr-ticGee, we expressed our concern that the borehole gamma logging method employed by Kerr.ficGee to determine the extent of uranium contamination in the soil was not yielding meaningful results.

Kerr-McGee agreed to set up a cross-check program, where uranium concentrations measured by their borehole logging method would be checked against radiochemical analysis of soil samples taken from the same locations. The cross-check program is complete, and Kerr-McGee has agreed that their borehole logging measurements were invalid.

This means that the previous estimates of contaminated soil volumes are also invalid.

Kerr.McGee has not yet made new estimates.

Glen Sjoblom told the Kerr.McGee representatives that we have some technical misgivings about the Cimarron Site Investigation Report submitted to us in October 1989. We will send a letter to Kerr.McGee with details of our concerns, and all parties agreed that a meeting of the appropriate geological and hydrological specialists would be scheduled for February 2?,1990.
