Dear Governor Wilder:
As you assume the Office of Governor of Virginia, I look forward to working with you to fulfill the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) responsi-i bilities to protect public health and safety in regulating nuclear facilities and materials. One important aspect of NRC-State cooperation in this regard is the NRC's State Liaison Officer Program. Accordingly, I am writing to invite Virginia's continued participation in that program.
In 1976, the NRC adopted a recomendation of State organizations, including the National Governors' Association, that we request each State to appoint a single person to act as liaison to NRC to improve Federal / State coopera-tion. The NRC looks to the Governor-appointed State Liaison Officers to provide a communication channel between the States and the NRC, to be the key person in the State to keep the Governor completely informed on regulatory health and safety matters as appropriate to their interests and responsibilities, and to provide NRC with answers to questions posed to the States on particular issues.
Former Governor Gerald Baliles appointed Addiston Slayton, Jr., State Coordinator of the Department of Emergency Services, as the most recent Viiginia State Liaison Officer. The NRC will continue to work with
