ORDER MODIFYING LICENSE This is to inform the Commission that an Order Modifying Licenses (Effective
.Imerliately) has been issued today to Cintichem, Tuxedo, New York.
This action was based on the identification of an unmonitored release of radioactively contaminated water from the facility's reactor building to an onsite retention pond as a result of a failure of the concrete wall of the gama pit (a water filled pool used for temporary storage of radioactive material) and a subsequent failure of the holdup tank (which is located in the reactor building and which is used to allow the decay of short-lived isotopes).
The Order required, among other things, that the reactor remain shutdown until a plan was provided to identify and repair leaks, as well as implementing a l
monitoring program.
In addition, the Order required a detailed plan for the identification of the root causes of the releases.
Under the terms of the Order, the licensee may within 30 days of the. effective date of the Order, request a hearing. !h: wever, a written answer or request for a hearing will not stay the innediate effectiveness of the Order.
The State of New York has been notified.
