Special Report No.90-001, Unit 2.  ;

"A" Train Reactor Vessel Level (

Indicating System Inoperable For More Than Sevsn Days i

At'1326 on January 11, 1990, the heater associated with one ot' the heated

. junction thermocouple sensors in the "A" train of the reactor sessel level indicating system (RVLIS) failed. This is the fifth of the eight sensors '

-to fail on the'"A" train probe. Technical Specification 3.3.3.8 requires at least four of the sensors on each train to be operable. Therefore, the "A" train of RVLIS was declared inoperable.

Technical Specification 3.3.3.8 requires that an inoperable RVLIS probe be restored to operable status within seven days. However, if repairs art not feasible without shutting down, Technical Specification 3.3.3.8 requires that a Special Report be submitted within 30 days. Therefore, this Special Report is being submitted.

Investigation has shown that repairs are not feasible without shutting 4 down. It has been planned to replace the "A" train RVLIS probe during the next refueling outage which is currently scheduled to begin in the fall of 1990. ,
