Water Permits Branch Water Management Division 841 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, PA 19107 EPA Permit No. PA0025615 Renortable Occurrence

Dear Sir:

As -required by EPA Permit No.

PA0025615,.the following information. is provided in regard to a reportable occurrence at Beaver Valley' Power Station:

D Discharge 103, the Unit I clarifier Settling Basin, exceeded the monthly average-specification with respect = to total suspended solids 57.86 mg/1.

There were no violations of the daily maximum-spec (ifications).

The twenty-four hour composite 1

' sample taken ou 12/23/89 measured 98.80 mg/l-TSS.

Immediate investigation-proved-that the entire surface of the basin had frozen' thus prohibiting a representative cample.

On 12/27/89, l

when the surface had. thawed, another twenty-four hour composite-sample was taken which contained 16.92 mg/l TSS..In addition, due to the rising sludge level in the basin over the previous

(

several -months, a licensed waste hauler was contacted and began l'

removing sludge from the basin on 1/2/90.

It is expected that I

these-: efforts will reduce future affluent solids values to a low L

- level..

If you have any questions concerning this report, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Very truly yours v

A. M. Dulick N Chemistry Manager l
