' Enclosed is' a summary of a meeting that was held Wednesday, January 17, 1990 with Nuclear Packaging, Inc. (NuPac) on the subject of disposal of activated metal components.
As described in the sunnary, NRC representatives stated 4
that they would arrange for a neeting to take place between appropriate individuals from the States and LLWM.
As the appropriate LLWM contact with State regulatory authorities, we request your assistance in setting up the meeting.

Purpose:
- Discussion of Disposal of Activated Metal Components Summary:
Nuclear Packaging, Inc. (NuPac) requested this meeting in order to discuss the disposal of activated metal :omponents and the need for guidance from the NRC in this technical area.
CTemus of NuPac presented proposed approaches for the disposal of l
activated metal components.
A specific aspect of each of the proposed approaches that was' presented was how it addressed the criterion imposed in a license condition by the State of Washington DSHS of not more than 15% void volume within a package that was to be buried.
NuPac representatives discussed the fact that each of the proposed approaches could meet the criterion, depending on assumptions and definitions made about certain aspects of the disposal.
NuPac also discussed the fact that, while South Carolina had the same license condition, they were implementing it differently.
NRC stated that it would be appropriate for the NRC to meet with representatives of the States of Washington and South Carolina to discuss the issues.
NRC stated that it would arrange for this meeting through the appropriate channels as soon as possible.
