i STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF NOMINATION OF JOHNNIE A. MOORE i
Under a program developed and administered by Johnnie A. Moore of the i
Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC's) Public Affairs staff, more than 10,000 elementary and secondary school students have been provided with positive role models and mentors from the NRC.
t Through recruitment efforts of Mr. Moore, the NRC-sponsored Volunteers in the School Program presently involves more than 300 agency employees who volunteer their expertise to youngsters at more than 80 schools in the i
Washington, D.C. area as classroom lecturers, mentors, tutors, science fair judges, counselors to school administrators and faculty, assembly i
speakers, and as hosts on field trips to NRC Headquarters.
The program began in 1985 with three pilot schools in Montgomery County, i
Maryland; it now involves more than 80 participating schools.
Initially, the program was begun in response to Congressional and Presidential initiatives appealing for Federal agencies to assist schools in improving the quality of educational systems in America by adopting a school and encouraging their government employees to work with the institution.
Following successful experiences with pilot schools in Montgomery County.
a partnership agreement was formed with the entire Montgomery County Public I
I School system in 1986. Outside of Montgomery County, NRC volunteers also I
have assisted students from schools in the District of Columbia; Price i
Georges County in Maryland; Prince William County in Northern Virginia; as I
well as students from outside the Washington area. The range of students reached include the gifted and talented, as well as the disadvantaged and underachieving.
Mr. Moore's success is attributed to his personal interaction with the faculties at the various schools. This' effort assures that the programs provide meaningful enrichment experiences for the students.
Since the i
program's inception, the reputation of NRC's highly capable cadre of professionals eager to share their expertise has attracted thousands of youths throughout the area seeking more exposure to the areas of I
mathematics, science, technology, and support services.
The program continues to gain the recognition and support of NRC officials and school administrators. The growing ranks of NRC volunteers now include the Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Comission.
As a direct result of Mr. Moore's dynamic leadership, the Nuclear-Regulatory Commission was honored with the Montgomery County Schools 1988-89 Outstanding Service Award.
