Dear Mr. Veil,

As diarummad previously, BG&E is planning to replace the traveling >

screens at (.Azr Calvert Cliffs Ntaclear Power Plant. 'Jhs new screens ,

being proposed are MC dual flow traveling screens. Since cur '

l ocnversation, Richard McIm:n (PPER) cantacted me and requested further '

dstails regartiing screen design. Enclosed are the new screen specifications.

'the original screens (24 screens total for both units ocabined) used at Calvert Cliffs were F?C thrtnagh flew screens. '!hase screens were being used when igingement/entraissuunt studies were performed (1976-1980). In the mid 1980s, it was dar'idad to to dual flow screens in order to igrove performance of screens dur high igir1gement epiardam. Pbur of the old PMC screers were replaced with two Beaudrey screm (a dual flow screen), and two FMC dual speed screens (through flow). A survival study was ocrrhacted in June -

August 1986 to datarmine if there were significant differences between screen types. Based on this survival study, the Beaudrwy screens were censidated acceptable for replaosment of the old P?C screens.

Currently, the screen types and plaosments are the same as described in the 1986 survival study (copy attached).

'!he proposed P?C dual flow screens are similar in w.mL to the Beaudrey (i.e. they are both dual flow) . Informaticri showing l.

differences / similarities in design are attached. Sczne information is also included on the old DC through flew screens.

The eact schedule for replaomaant is net firm. Du Fall of 1990 would r M 1y be the earliest screen replacement. At that time, two acreens would be replaced and possibly an additional two screens if they are available. Eventually all screens will be replaced.
