requesting authorization to possess and use calibration sources containing
.200 microcuries of Americium-241.

i On Novenber 24, 1989, Materials License No. SNM.33 was amended authorizing CE 4
to use enriched uranium in the Building 254 pellet production system. CE plans to use gama spectroscopy in this new production process.
In order to do this, a radioactive source is required to calibrate the spectrometer prior to placing the spectrometer in operation. The staff has determined that the present radiological safety program is adequate to control the use of Americium.241. Therefore, to accommodate this request, it is recomended that Conditions 6.E., 7.E., and 8.E., be added as follows:

Staff finds that the proposed change to the license will have no adverse effect on the public health and safety or the environment. Approval of the amendment application is recommended.
The Region 111 Principal Inspector has no objection to this proposed action.
