This refers to the conversation of June 29, 1981, in which Mr. H. L. Toy of your staff described to Mr. C. C. Peck of this office the measures you propose to take to assure that external package contamination IcVels do not exceed DOT limits during transport of the NAC-lD cask from the West Jefferson Nuclear Facility to the Turkey Point nuclear station.
It is our understanding that these measures will include the following:
Determination that residual radioactivity is sufficiently low to permit use of type A packaging.
Decontamination of the cask surface to less than the DOT limit.
Packaging of the cask in reinforced plastic which will cover the entire external surface of the cask except the trunnions.

secured with plastic tape.

The package integrity, including the plastic covering will be inspected periodically. The first check will be made about 20 /)DD,'
miles from WJNF by Battelle personnel.
Subsequent checks will N
be made at intervals not exceeding 200 miles by the vehicle
'Do driver (s). Battelle will be responsible for all necessary g goj radiation surveys cnd repairs to the plastic cover en route.
This office finds the above measures acceptable and sufficient to permit release of the NAC-1D cask from your site.
