Gentlemen:
In reviewing our letter of March 19, 1981 submitted to you as required by 10 C.F.R. Part 50.48 and 10 C.F.R. Part 50 Appendix 'l requiring upgrading of fire protection plans at Joseph M. Tarley Nuclear Plant, Unit Nos.1 and 2, we believe additional information may te helpful in your evaluation. Accordingly, we are gathering such additional infor-mation to supplement that provideci with our March 19, 1981 filing and this will be submitted as soon as possible.
Please note that, while the March 19, 1981 letter does not explicitly request an exemption from Nuclear Regulatory Commission ("NRC") fire protection requirements, we hereby advise you that the intent of that letter was to seek exemptions to the extent any information submitted therein indicated that we would not meet NRC requirements. Specifically, as previously intended and herein restated, exemptions are requested, pursuant to 10 C.F.R. Part 50.12, from the following requirements of 10 C.F.R. Part 50.48:
- 1) That the implementation date in Paragraph (c)(3) for installation of modifications needed for " inaccessible areas" of Unit No. I listed in on Alabama Power Company's March 19, 1981 filing, that do not require prior NRC approval, but do require plant shutdown, be extended from the date currently established thereby to April 1,1984.
- 2) That the date in Paragraph (c)(5) for submitting design descriptions of dedicated shutdown systems or other similar modificat: ens needed to satisfy Section III. G.3 of Appendix R be extended fron, March 19,1981 to October 1,1982 for Unit No.1, and to March 1,1982 for Unit No. 2 of the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant.
