Docket flo. 50-271 JUN 2 4 19Bl LICENSEE: Vermont Yankee leuclear Power Corporation

SUBJECT:

Vermont Yankee Reload Analysis tiethods tieeting Summary, tiay 28, 1981 On liay 28, 1981, the NRC staff met with Yankee Atomic Electric Company (.YAEC) to discuss new reload analysis methods to be applied to the Vermont Yankee reload #9. A list of attendees is enclosed.

Vermont Yankee requested the meeting to seek confinnation that st'aff review was proceeding such that use of these methods in,the reload #9 analysis appeared feasible.

Vermont Yankee plans to shut down in October 1981 and restart in December 1981 following reload #9.

Barring unforeseen problems, che staff foresaw no reasons, either technically or from resource availability, that the review schedule could not be met.

Physics and thermal hydraulics review appeared to be on schedule.

Review of the RETRAN code may be the pacing item.

Vermont Yankee stated that performing their own analysis seemed to them to offer the following advantages:

1.

Less cost 2.

Faster turnaround 3.

VY (and YAEC people) know the plant better than the vendor 4.

A better product results After review by the staff of a reload using Vermont Yankee methodology in 1981, Vermont Yankee plans in 1982 to remove cycle dependent limits from the Technical Specifications so that a reload based on a 10 CFR 50.59 approach may be used.
