Dear Mr. Audin:
This is in partial response to your letter dated April 19, 1981, in which you requested, pursuant to 'he Freedom of Information Act, three categories of records pertaining to spent fuel casks.
This will also confirm your telephone conversations on May 6 and May 20,1981, with Ms. Nina Toms of my staff.
In response to category a) of your request, we are able to provide twc reports at this time, as identified on Appendix A.
Other reports are being searched for by an NRC regional office and will be sent to you at a later date.
In regard to category b) of your request, as Ms. Toms indicated in the conversation, a manual search by one professional person of all inspection and enforcement reports for all operating plants is estimated to take one week.
In light of this information, it was then agreed that Ms. Toms would send to you the documents listed on Appendix B.
The regulation of research laboratories falls under the Departnent of Energy (DOE) and not the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
In regard to category c), NRC does not inspect shipments while enroute to or from sites where delivery or pickup of spent fuel has occurred.
