In the Matter of IIhl\\ p W
The Regents of the University of California (UCLA Research Reactor)
Docket No. 50-142 (Proposed Renewal of Facility License)
Dear Judge Bowers:
In response to two matters pending before the Board, the University's position is as follows.
Intervenor's Request for a Protective Order The University is not opposed to Intervenor's request for a protective order and will agree to strike the language "so-called anti-nuclear" from page 1 ofour April 20 questions.
Intervenor's Request to qualify Mr. Hirsch as " Expert Interrogator" We have no objection to having Mr. Hirsch interrogate our expert witnesses under the direct supervision of Mr. Pollock.
de do request that the Board ask Mr. Hirsch to supplement his affidavit of qualifications with additional pertinent information.
It is our understanding that Mr. Hirsch is not a scientist and that he has not received a bachelor's degree or any advanced degree in a science or field of engineering.
Because it is proposed that he proceed as an expert interrogator we request that he be directed to be more explicit about his formal educational background and to correct us if we are wrong in our understanding.
I We would like to correct a statement made in Intervenor's i
request.
Mr. Hirsch has not "been appointed by the Academic l
Senate (at UCLA) to teach nuclear and other energy matters as a Visiting Lecturer."
Mr Hirsch is hired from time to time to teach a course for the " Council on Education Development" (CED).
