l ENCLOSURE 4
COMMONWEALTH EDISON COMPANY ZION STATION Units 1 and 2 Supplemental Response to IE Bulletin 81-03 In response to IE Bulletin 81-03, Commonwealth. Edison Environmental Affa' irs Department conducted a survey of the Zion Station.C-ibhouse Areas, Forecay Area, and the surrounding areas in the Lake Michigan.
In samples collected, Corbicula were not found.
A review of data from the last 10 years shows no sign of Corbicula in the Lake Michigan substrates near the station.
Inspections of certain heat exchangers has shown no signs of clams or mussels.
During Unit 2's 1980 refueling outage, the Reactor Containment Fan Cooler (RCFC) tubes ano tubesheets were inspected ano sludge lanced.
During every refueling outage, the main condenser's tubesheet is cleaned and inspected.
Corbicula has not been found during these inspections.
Regarding oetection of future infestations of clams, surveillance PT-0 monitors containment temperature.
This reflects the effectiveness of the RCFC's.
Flow readings from the outlet of the coolers ar_e logged daily.
Monitoring both logs, flow blockage or degradation in the RCFC's can be detected.
The condenser waterboxes are normally inspected every refueling outage.
Any other heat exchanger using service water for cooling will be inspected when it is opened up for maintenance.
In conclusion, we feel that the particular problem outlined in I.E..Bulletin 81-03 is ite specific and does not pose a problem for Zion Station.
