Dear Mr. Keppler:

MONTICELLO NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT Docket No. 50-263 License No. DPR-22 h

Response to I. E. Bulletin No. 81-03 Current field monitoring programs indicate that the asiatic clam Corbicula sp. is not present in the water supply (Mississippi River) to the Monticello Nuclear Power Plant. L ace the mussel Mvt11us sp. is found only in ' salt water, it will not be f6 nd in the fresh water intake of the Monticello Plant.

The EPA - Monticello Ecological Research Station and Northern States Power Company's Ecological Studies Department are conducting ongoing studies associated with aquatic life in the Mississ: i River (adjacent to the Monti-cello Plant) and have not detected the prest.:e of this asiatic clam. These agencies have been alerted to the danger of the presence of these cla=s and will inform the plant should the clam be detected. In all likelihood, if these class are to appear in the NSP system, they will show up at the Prairie Island plant first, since it is located about 70 miles downstream and we would be forvarned of their invasion into the area. The presence of the Coon Rapids Das located 30 miles downstream of the Monticello Plant would effectively block or delay the upstream migration (by attachment of clams to boats).

Yours truly, m - .
