S SUPPLEMENTAL RESPONSE NO. 2 TO NRC IE BULLETIN NO. 80-24 PREVENTION OF DAMAGE DUE TO WATER LEAKAGE INSIDE CONTAINMENT (OCTOBER 17, 1980 INDIAN POINT 2 EVENT)
SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS NO. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 On January 2, 1981, we indicated in our response to thd subject Bulletin Item No. 3.h. that a radiation detector is installed in the service water outlet piping of each containment fan coil.
We also indicated that upon initiation of a high radiation level, a bezel alarm is actuated and the coil is isolated by procedure.
After further review of this response, it became evident these statements required clarification and correction.
An in-line radiation detector is installed in each of the service water outlet pipes of each 'atainment fan coil in Unit 1.
On Unit No. 2 three off-line radiation detectors are used to sample the service water discharge of the five con-tainment fan coil units.
The sample lines are equipped with isolation valves.
As mentioned above, a bezel al. arm will be actuated in the Unit 1 Control Room upon detection of high radiacion in the service water outlet piping for each of its fan coil units.
For Unit 2 an RMS alarm will be actuated in the Unit 2 Contrni Room on the overhead alarm panel.
The RMS CRT and printer will indicate high radiation detected in the fan cooler outlet piping.

- Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Director U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 6/2/81 If the alarms are actuated for either unit, the operator does not have a specific procedure to immediately isolate the fan cooler service water supplies.
Emergency Instruction I-4.16, Radiation Incident, requires the operator'to investigate. the cause of the alarm.
The final decision to isolate the coils is based upon plant conditionr, analyses and indications.
