e INTRODUCTION

The ecology of York Haven Pond near the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station-(TMINS) has been under investigation since February 1974.

Studies initiated in April 1974 include analysis of ambient water quality, ichthyoplankton (far-field), ichthyoplankton entrainment,

- macroin arrebrates, fish population dynamics, impingement of fishes, o

creel survey, and thermal plume capping.

This report discusses the progress of. investigations conducted in

April 1981.

2 COMPLIANCE 9ITH ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS (ETS)

Objectives : To (3termine compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental *mnitoring programs specified in sections 3.1.1.a.(4), 3.1.2.a.,4.2, and'4.6.1 of the' ETS and to insure that said programs are performed as detailed in the Generation Procedures Manual.

Progress: Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Procedures Document was achieved in April (Table 1).

A program by program summary of, the progress for April follows.

MACROINVERTEBRATES Objective: To describe the diversity and d.istribution of the benthic macroinvertebrates occurring at the five benthos sampling -

stations near IMINS.

-Progress: Replicate (4) benthos sa tes were taken on 7 and 20 April (Table 1).

Enumeration, determination -of dry weights, and identification of macroinvertebrates have been completed through 20 April.

I ICHTHYOPT.ANKTON Objectives:

(1) To determine the species composition, abundance, and distribution of ichthyoplankton in York Haven Pond; and (2) To investigate ichthyoplankton entrained at TMINS Unit 1 and 2 Intakes.

FAR-FIELD Progress: Day /aight samples were taken at the 14 stations on 7, 13-14, 21, and 27-28 April (Table 1). A total of 58 1arvae was I

taken, 54 from night samples and 4 from day. Water temperature ranged from 9.0 to 15.0 C.

3 All samples have been sorted; most larvae have been identified and processed. The shield darter was most numerous. Other species taken included the white sucker, tesse11ated, darter, banded darter, and walleye. A coregonid larva taken on 28 April was the second specimen of this species recorded from York' Havct. Pond. The specimen is probably a lake herring (Coregonus artedii) and has been sent to the Great Lakes Fishery Laboratory of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for verification.

ENTRAINMENT Progress.

Ichthyoplankton surveys were conduct,ed at Units 1 and '2 on 14-15 and 28-29 April (Table 1). No specimens were taken at either Unit on 14-15 April.

The 28-29 April collection yielded one ichthyoplanktor (surface) at Un. it 1, and 13 specimens (8 surface, 5 oblique) at Unit 2.

TRAPNET Objectives: '(1) To determine the distribution and relative abundance of fishes in the Three Mile Island area vulnerable to trapnet; (2) To provide specimens for inovements studies; (3) To monitor the occurrence of diseased fishes; (4) To provide specimens for radiation analysis; and (5) To determine reproductive status for fishes throughout the year.

Progress: Samples were taken on 8-10 and 21-24 April (? fable 1).

A total of 94 fish of 12 species was taken on 8-10 April (Table 2). Most l

fish (38) and greatest biomass (5.56 kg) occurred at Station 9B2; most

. species (7) were found at 1A3 and 11A2. The pumpkinseed was the most l

abundant species and comprised 33.07. of the total catch. The white crappie (28.77.) and rock bass (16.07.) were also common. Two brown

4 bullhead, 2 channel catfish, and 12 rock bass were tagged. Two previously 1

tagged bass were recaptured. One channel catfish was parasitized by leeches and one pumpkinseed was missing its left eye. One northern hog suckerandonepumpkinseedwerkfounddeadintrapnets.

Eighty-eight fish of eight species were" taken on 22-24 April (Table 3).

Most fish (35) were taken at Station 1A3 and~ most species (6) and greatest biomass (14.81 kg) at 9B2. The psnpkinseed and rock bass were most abundant and comprised 55.77 and 22.77. of the total catch, respectively.

Thirteen rock bass were tagged and four previously tagged rock bass were recaptured. Two yellow perch exhibited slight black, spot infections.

One dead common carp and one yellow bullhead were observed.

Objectives:

(1) To determine the species composition of fish upstream and downdtream from the TMINS Discharge vulnerable to seine;

. (2) To determine the relative condition factor for important species; and -(3) To determine the reproductive status for fishes throughout the year.

Progress: Collections were made at the 10 stations on 9 and 7.3 April (Table 1). A total of 5,024 fish of 19 species was taken on 9 April (Table 4). Most fish (1,443) were taken at Station 10B5 and most species (9) and greatest biomass (324.9 g) at 13B5. The spotfin shiner was the most abundant species at all stations except 4A2 and comprised 93.17. of the total catch. The pumpkinseed predominated at 4A2. Numbers of fishes bearing slight black spot infestations remained similar to those reported from March collections and included 202 spotfin shiner, 7 bluntnose minnow, 3 spottail shiner, 2 cutlips minnow, 1 common shiner, 1 swallowtail shiner, 1 rosyface shiner, 1 blacknose dace, and 1 white-sucker. 5 exhibited moderate black spot infections. Glochidia parasitized 18 pumpkinseed, 15 tesse11ated darter, 12 spottail shiner, 8 spotfin shiner, 1 blacknose dace, and 1 bluegill. One p"umpkinseed had a protuberance of the right eye.' Fifteen female tesse11ated darter were gravid and one male was in breeding coloration.

Sampling on 23 April yielded 6,049 fish'of 18 species (Table 5).

Most fish (2,217) were taken at Station 10B5, most species (11) at 13B5, and greatest biomass (539.5 g) at 4A2. The spotfin shiner was the most numerous species at all stations except 9Al and 4A2 and comprised 89.97. of the total catch. The pumpkinseed (6.27.) was, also common. The frequency of black spot infestations remained high and similar to that reported in previous collections. Slight black spot infections were recorded from 169 spotfin shiner, 12 bluntuose minnov, 3 common shiner, 2 spottail shiner, 2 tesse11ated darter, I rosyface shiner, and 1 black--

nose dace. Moderate black spot infections were observed on one fa11 fish and one white sucker. An intense black spot infection was observed on one-blacknose dace. Five.pumpkinseed exhibited eye protuberances of one or both eyes. Twenty-nine of the,44 tesse11ated darter collected were gravid females and 4 were males in breeding condition.

No pattern of parasite infection with regard to the location of TMINS was observed from either April collection.

IMPINGEMENT OF FISH Objectives:

(1) To determine the numbers and species impinged on the river water intake screens; (2) To determine day-night differences in impingement frequency; and (3) To determine the extent of mortality of impinged fish.

6 Progress: Impingement surveys were conducted on 15-16 and 27-28 April at the TMINS Unit 1 and 2 Intakes (Table 1). Unit 1 impinged 4 fish of 3 species weighing 10.8 g.

Most fis,h vere juvenile and alive (Tables 6 through 9).

Fish biomass and numbers were highest during the 15-16 April survey. More fish were coliected at 0400 h chan during the other survey periods. The estimated impingement for Unit'l for April was 60 fish weighing 162.0 g (0.4 lb).

Unit 2 impinged 26 fish of 9 species weighing 556.2 g (Tables 10 through 13). Most fish were adult or juvenile and dead. Fish biomass was highest during the 27-28 April survey and numbers were highest during the 15-16 April survey. The estimated impingement for April from Unit 2 was 390 fish weighing 8,343.0 g (18.4 lb).

The total estimated impingement at TMINS during April was 450 fish weighing 8,505.0 g (18.8' lb).

ELECTROFISHING Objectives:

(1) To provide specimens for radiation analysis and movements studies; and (2) To determine.the relative abundance of fishes vulnerable to electrofishing in various parts of York Haven Pond.

Progress: Sampling was conducted on four nights in April (Table 1).

Twenty-four collections in 12 zones yielded 837 specimens of 19 species (Table 14). The pumpkinseed (169 specimens), quillback (148),

smallmouth bass (140), rock bass (98), and walleye (93) were most t

abundant. A total of 141 fish was tagged for movements studies.

MOVEMENTS OF FISHES Objective: To determine if fishes in waters receiving the TMINS j

effluent mix with fishes from other areas.

Progress: A total of 170 fish was tagged and 21 previously tagged l

fish were recaptured in April. Recaptured fishes included the rock bass l

(12 specimens) and smallmouth bass (9). Three rock bass moved downstream l

7 distances of 0.2 to 1.2 km and one made a 3.5 km complex movement.

The remaining rock bass were recaptured in the same areas in which they were tagged. Two smallmouth bass moved 19.0 and 20.0 km upstream; the remaining cma11 mouth bass were recaptured in the same areas in which they were tagged.

CREEL SURVEYS Objectives:

(1) To determine the extent and success of sport fishing; and (2) To determine information on angler residence and use of catch.

Progress: Creel surveys were conducted in all, areas on 7,12, 22, and 25 April (Table 1).

The 277 anglers interviewed fished 501.55 hours6.365741e-4 days <br />0.0153 hours <br />9.093915e-5 weeks <br />2.09275e-5 months <br /> and caught 706 fish (Tables 15 through 18). The actual harvest was 218 fish or 30.9% of the total catch. The mean catch per effort (c/e) was 1.41.

Equal numbers of anglers (88) fished at the York Haven Generating Station and the East Dam. Most hours fished (185.70) occurred at the-General Reservoir. The greatest number of fish taught (254) and kept (84) was recorded at the East Dam. The highest mean c/e (3.79) occurred at the West Dam.

Smallmouth bass (331 specimens) were caught in greatest numbers.

Other species caught included the walleye (143), rock bass (118), and unidentified sunfishes (49).

Approximately 74% of the anglers interviewed lived in York or Dauphin counties. Most of the anglers reported they eat some of their catch.

AMBIENT WATER QUALITY Objective: To determine concentrations of selected water quality parameters in ambient river areas and the TMINS effluent.

Progress: Water quality samples were collected on 7 and 20 April at the five river stations (Table 1).

Data are currently being analyzed; results will be presented in the May 1981 progress report.
