Docket Nos.: 50-416 and 50-417 JUN 4 1981 MEMORANDUM FOR:

A. Schwencer, Chief, LB#2, DL FROM:

R. Auluck, Project Manager, LB#2, DL

SUBJECT:

SURRRY OF MEETING WITH MISSISSIPPI POWER AND LIGHT COMPANY AND BECHTEL POWER CORPORATION (MAY 27, 1981)

A meeting was held in Gaithersburg, Maryland, on May 27, 1981 with Bechtel Power Corporation to discuss the independent structural analysis and the results obtained by the NRC consultants EG&G. Mississippi Power

& Light did not attend the meeting. A copy of the meeting notice, meet-ing agenda and attendance list are enclosed as attachments A, B & C.

A.M. Session Bechtel started the meeting with the description of their computer codes (CE 917F, CE 920 and CE 921) and their use in the seismic analysis for Grand Gulf Units 1 and 2.

Ken Lee of Bechtel explained how data for trans.lational and rotational motions at the bases of the structures was extracted from these cor'puter codes and transmitted to EG&G (NRC con-sultants) for seismic analysis. 'It was also stated that Bechtel has reanalyzed part of the containment building structure by using BSAP com-puter code and using the data transmitted to EG&G. These two Bechtel analyses gave similar results thus confirming Bechtel's original analysis. Tomie Thompson and Richard Novak of EG&G explained their method and model for seis-mic analysis of containment building using ADINA computer code. EG&G results disagreed with the results obtained by Bechtel-but with the sign reversed on the rotational motion, the EG&G results agreed with the Bechtel results.

There was a confusion concerning sign convention used in the data obtained from Bechtel computer code CE 920 and post processed for EG&G.

P.M. Session EG&G and Bechtel compared results for the auxiliary building analysis. There again, the results compared very well when the sign was reversed for the 1

rotational motion as transraitted by Bechtel. After discussing with their technical specialist Bechtel stated that sign convention, used in Bechtel CE 900 series computer codes is opposite to the sign conven-tion used in Bechtel BSAP computer program. Bechtel feels that they did not interpret the signs properly when extracting information from CE 920 comouter code for transmittal to EG&G.

j Staff Comments Staff concluded that Bechtel should do a sample analysis which will check the proper sign convention used in the Bechtel computer codes.

In addi-tion, Bechtel will respond to the action items (attachment D) generated at the meeting.
