SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF JUNE 2, 1981 MEETING REGARDING PRESERVICE INSPECTION PROGRAM 1.
General Repre entatives of the staff and its contractor, Pacific Northwest Laboratories, met with the applicant to discuss the preservice inspection The meeting was held at the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station in program.
Jenkinsville, S. C.
A list of those persons who attended the meeting is included in the enclosure.
2.
Purpose The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the applicant's method of compliance with Section XI,1974 Edition, and 1975 Summer Addenda, for the preservice ultrasonic examination of piping system welds.
3.
Discussion Revision 2 of the preservice inspection program deleted the requests for relief for the examination of Class 1 and 2 piping system welds.
In a -
letter to H. Denton dated May 7,1981, numerous examination category B-J, C-F, and C-G welds were identified in which partial examinations were conducted to obtain a complete volumetric examination on each weld.
The applicant determined that these partial examinations meet Section XI requirements, therefore, relief was not requested.
In order to examine the validity of that action, we discussed the following,
topics:
Plant specific design, geometry, or materials of construction features that limit ultrasonic examination of piping system welds.
Examination procedures an; general practice when encountering limitations.
Volumetric coverage and effectiveness of examination.
Examination data from selectedwelds to illustrate practice.

! 4 As a result of that' discussion we requested that the applicant provide the following information:
1.
Justification of the use of a notch as an alternate reference reflector to the drilled hole required by Article 5 of Section V of the ASME Code.
2.
Identification of all weld joints where the minimum requirements of Section V could not be met along with a discussion of what was done and a justification.
3.
A complete discuss of the methods used to achieve optimum examination of austenitic welc'.s.
