MAIN 2 YANKEE ATOMIC POWUf) CCMPANY I.hited States Nuclear Regulatory Commission May 21, 1981 Attention: Mr. Boyce H. Grier, Director 3.

Adequacy of cooling flow is primarily determined by the component r.coling water outlet temperature from the heat exchangers that are cooled by service water.

4.

Maine Yankee periodically operates the Mussel Control System to prevent any detectable degradation of cooling water flow. The procedure for mussel control involves the use of warm water to flush the affected piping and heat exchangers.

The procedure is used periodically when the mussels are in post larval " spat" stage of develcpment.

5.

See the responses to Items 1-A above.

We trust that this information is satisfactory.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

Very truly yours, MAINE YANKEE ATOMIC PCwER CCMPANY v
