Dear Mr. Hendrie:

'4~, -

Last May 16 several colleagues and I wTote Chairman Ahearne to urge the expeditious review of the operating licen::a applications of two nuclear plants being constructed in Missouri and Kansas:

the Callaway Plant, Unit 1, owned by the Union Electric Company, and the Wolf Creek Generating Station, Unit 1, owned by the Kansas Gas and Electric Company, Kansas City Power and Light Company, and the Kansas Electric Power Cooperative, Incorporated.

That letter, a copy of which is attached, outlined the adverse consequences which would result from further delays in granting licenses to the plants.

I am disappointed to hear that almost a year later Kansas City Power and Light Company is still experiencing delays in having its l

operating license application reviewed.

This continued delay in l

reviewing the licenses is certainly not in the public's best interest.

I urge you to make NRC's license review program a top priority.

It is essential that necessary changes be made which will assure the timely licensing of nuclear power plants.

Thank you in advance for your attention to this important matter.

Sincerely, S
