Dear Mr. Tedesco:

This letter is in response to your December 19, 1980 request

, for Ice Condenser and Mark III containment' owners to conduct-a detailed analysis of the effects on. containment integrity of a potential hydrogen burn. -Your letter requested a response with a schedule for providing the analysis within~30 days. The required information was not available at that time. This memo provides the requested schedule.

We have made arrangements with Sargent and Lundy to. conduct the required ultimate strength analysis on the containment. This report is expected 'to be submitted ~for;your review in October,.1981.

In addition to making-arrangements for this ultimate strength analysis, IP has engaged-in a major engineering effort to evaluate and assess the effects of a hydrogen burn. This effort has in-i cluded the following activities:

l-

1) We have considered a number of alternatives for hydrogen control and have concluded that hydrogen recombination inside the cor tainment through the use of igniters is the most viable alterna-tive for the Clinton Power Station..
2) We have established a Mark III containment owners group.

to study the hydrogen issue. This~ group-has arranged for General Electric and Offshore Power Systems to conduct analysis associated with a hydrogen burn. This group's work will also be based on existing work conducted by TVA and other industry people. The results of this work will be applied to the Clinton Power Station.

3) We have made' arrangements to'obtain the MARCH' computer code and to conduct an evaluation to determine its adequacy for establishment of a hydrogen generation rate for our reactor.

In summary, we are proceeding with the engineering. effort to con @lete the requested analysis and to address the: hydrogen ' issue.

Please advise 'if you require additional information in this - matter.

Sincerely, L. . Koch Vice President 4
