Dear Mr._Grier:
Your letter of April 10, 1981, forwarded IE Bulletin 81-03 concerning " Flow Blockage of Cooling Water to Safety System Components by CORBICULA sp. (ASIATIC CLAMS) and MYTILUS SP.
(MUSSELS).
The Actions To Be Taken By Licensees are restated below along with'our responses.
Should there be any further questions please contact us.
Actions To Be Taken By Licencees I
Holders of Operating Licenses:
1.
Deter.
.e whether Corbicula sp. or Mytilus sp. is present in the vicinity of the station (local environment) in either the source or receiving water body.
If the results of current l
field monitoring programs provide reasonable evidence that l
neither of these species is present in the local environment, (k

J Response-
. Samples of benthic organisms have been taken at eleven sample stations from June,-1967, through April, 1980, with no-indications of either of these organisms in the Conowingo Pond.
Heat exchangers are cleaned during refueling outages and there has been no indication during these cleanings of the existence of these organisms.
4.
Describe methods either in-use or planned,(includira
' implementation 1date) for preventing and detecting future flow blockage or degradation due to clams or mussels or shell.
' debris.
Include the following information in this description:
a.
Evaluation of _ the potential, for intrusion of the organisms into these systems due to low water level and high velocities in the intake structure expected during worst case cohditions.
b.
Evaluation of effectiveness of prevention and detection methods used in the past or present or planned for future use.
Response
a.
. Evaluation of plant design indicates -that the potential for intrusion of these organisms is minimal due to the velocity l
profile in the intake structure.
These organisms are kept
-out of the ' pond by the conowingo Dam.
l b.
There is no need for preventative measures.
Surveillance tests'are conducted on the High Pressure Service Water System
'and the Emergency Service Water on a regular basis.
Included in these tests are measurements of flow.-
These tests will j
reveal' flow blockage situations.

'If the monitoring _ program of 5e ' reveals the presence of these
. organisms in Conowingo Pond in the future, the need for
. preventative measures'will be re-evaluated.
5.
Describe the actions taken in items 1 through 3 above and include' the following information:
a.-
Applicable portions of the environmental monitoring program including last sample date and results.
b.
Components and systems affected.
c.-
Extent of fouling if any existed.
d.
How and when fouling was-discovered.
e.
Corrective and. preventive actions.
Response
a.
Environmental samplac had ' been gathered under the now deleted Technical Specification 6.1.a.2.
This Technical
' Specification requirement was deleted in April of 1980.
b.
'Not applicable.
c.
Not applicable.
.d.
Not applicable, e.
Although these organisms have not be$n found in the conowingo.
Pond, a small monitoring program.for benthic organisms will be added to the existing environmental sampling program.
very truly yours, l
