Gentlemen:

We are pleased to coordinate our efforts with yours regarding the Edgemont cleanup Action Program. Since you were an attendee at the " Workshop on Radiological Surveys in Support of the Edgemont Cleanup Action Program",

held in Denver, Colorado on January 21 and 22,1981, I am sure you are already familiar with the efforts NRC has undenvay at Edgamont. The proceedings of that workshop are being finalized at this time, and the final report will be sent to you as soor as it is available. The final workshop report will contain up-to-data sunnaries of all the radiological surveys completed in Edgemont by Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories (PNL).

During the stauner of 1980, radiological engineering assessments were completed by the ARIX Corporation at 23 locations which were previously identified by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the State of South Dakota as having uranita mill tailings on the property.

Copies of the ARIX Reports are being sent to you under separate cover.

Furthers PNL under NRC contract, is planing to complete, some time this sunner, radiological engineering assessments at 89 additional properties which have been identified as failing to meet the EPA's proposed open-land clean-up standards. Copies of these additional engineering assessment rewrts will be sent to you as oon as they are completed.

In response to your request for infonnation on projected clean-up costs, we have projected that based on available survey data to date, that remedial action may be necessary for at least 63 properties in Edgemont.

Using previous reports and allowing for inflation and sub-contractor overhead, we estim~+e the cost to complete remedial action will average about $11,000 per property.
