QUESTION 4 (OUTSIDE AUXILIARY BUILDING) f r
"A fire in the main auxiliary transformer or the reserve auxiliary.
transformer outside at the southeast-corner of the ' auxiliary building i
would create excessive smoke. Describe how the smoke from this postulated fire, or any other fire on the south or' east side of the I
building, will;be prevented from entering the air intake plehums
~
(for the diesel-generator rooms or other areas) which are located i
on the south wall of *.he auxiliary building directly above the l
transformers, and thereby activating the ionization detectors which will discharge CO into the diesel-generator rooms."
2 r
i dESPONSE Smoke from an outside s rce, such as a transformer fire, could possibly I
enter the air intake louvers located in the auxiliary building wall at
.i column row 15.
The ventilation filters will remove 50% of all particles in the 3 micron range and 100% of particles in the 10-micron range; therefon, the major amount of smoke particles would be removed by the ventilation system filters. Additional filtration is available when the evaporative cooling units are operating in the summer, j
The diesel-generator rooms are normally ventilated and maintained at a slight positive pressure by the turbine building ventilation system.
The diesel-generator air intake fr operate only when a diesel generator t
is operating. The CO systems in t. diesel-generator rooms are actuated r
2 by fixed temperature detectors, thus the presence of smoke in the diesel-generator rooms will not cause an inadvertent discharge of the C0 7
systems.
The actuation of the heat detectors in the diesel-generator rooms init-7 iates an alarm both Iccally and in the' control roon prior to actuation of the CO fire pr te:ti n system.
2 l 17 At the south end of the auxiliary building, a sheet metal enclosure is provided. Its main purpose is to provide air from the northerly direction and 1%it DEG fumes and smoke from entering the south minimum outside-air 18 intake of the control room HVAC snd Division 2 diesel ventilation system.
I I
Since Division 1 and Division 2 diesels provide redundant power supplies to saf-Nt down the plant, the ventilation and combustion air i
intakr
- a Division 2 diesel is routed to the auxiliary building roof l
~
(elevs.<'n S' f t 7 in.) to provide a separate and diverse intake for 15 i
.ompared to Division 1 (and 3) intakes. The separate and
_[

takes, therefore, provide protection from concentrated combustion products produced by a fire from the main transformer located
(
south of the diesel building at grade (elevatior 520 ft 0 in.).
