RESPONSE TO NRC REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT CONTAINMENT PURGE

(

REFERENCE:

NRC LETTER FROM T. A. IPPOLITO TO H. G. PARRIS DATED JANUARY 27, 1981)

NRC Request Provide a statement that the nuclear radiation monitors which initiate ESF signals are or are not safety grade equipment.- * '

TVA RESPONSE The nuclear radiation monitors that initiate an ESF signal are safety grade equipment and were designed and fabricated as such.

NRC Request Provide a statement that all instrumentation and control equipment which initiates an ESF signal will or will not withstand the environment (including postulatad accident conditions) where it is located. The envirorment shall also include seismic requirements.

TVA RESPONSE The environmental qualification of all instrumentation and control equipment located in areas of harsh environment to withstand all environmental conditions, has been addressed in TVA's response to NRC's IE Bulletin 79-01B, Environmental Qualification of Class IE Equipment, submitted October 31, 1980. The qualification of electrical equipment in mild environments will be addressed and documented in TVA's files by June 30, 1982, as required by NRC's Memorandum and Order of May 23, 1980

( CLI-80-21 ) .

The nuclear radiation monitors are located outside primary containment on the refuel floor. The environmental conditions in this area during postulated accidents are not excessive. The capability of the monitors to initiate an ESF signal within the time period of interest is fully expected.
