RE:
J. M. Farley Nuclear Plant Special Report "'Ii>
Unit 2 Technical Specification 3.7.11.2
Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
This Special Report is being submitted as required by Unit 2 Tech-nical Specification 3.7.11.2.
The cable spreading room sprinkler system was declared inoperable at 1800 on 3/21/81 due to spurious actuation (i.e. charging of the sprinkler piping) of the sprinkler system. The spurious actuation re-suited when the smoke detector system reset switch was pressed. This removed power from the sprinkler systems solenoid which in turn opened a clapper valve. With the clapper valve open, water sprayed from the valve to an open drain funnel and the floor. Upon discovery of this condition the water supply to the sprinkler system was isolated.
Technical Specification 3.7.11.2 action statement requirements were met.
This occurrence is attributable to a design deficiency in the smoke detector reset switch wiring. Modifications to the smoke detector reset switch were completed and the system was returned to service at 4/9/81.
Sincerely yours, i
i A
