Subject:
Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station Docket No. 50/395 Reportable Substantial Safety Hazard Final Report Nuclear Eng. File 3.1051
Dear Mr. O'Reilly:
On Thursday, February 5, 1981, a potential substantial safety hazard as defined by 10CFICl was reported to Mr. John Rausch at NRC Region II Office. On March 10, 1981, an interim report was sent to Mr. James P. O'Reilly, Director of NRC Region II.
The item involved missing air deflectors inside the emergency feedwater pump 1B motor.
The item is being reported under our 10CFR50.55(e) procedure. This is con-sidered a final report on the matter.
Very truly yours, B

10CFR21 - SUBSTANTIAL SAFETY HAZARD FINAL RE? ORT AIR DEFLECTOR MISSING ON G.E. MOTOR 1.
Name and Address of Reporting Individual Tom Brewer South Carolina Electric & Gas Company Post Office Box 764 Colu=bia, South Carolina 29218 2.
Identification of Basic Component General Electric Emergency Feedwater Pump Motor Missing Air Deflector 3.
Identification of Firm Supplying Componenc Generr.1 Electric 4.
Nature of Defect, Substantial Safety Razard Created, and Evaluation The emergency feedwater pump motor 13 has two missing air deflectors inside the motor. If the emergency feedwater pump motor 13 would be required to operate at near full load, because of the missing air deflectors, the motor could be damaged due to overheating.
The Emergency Feedvater System (EFS) provides the required feedwater flow to the steam generators from cooldown when the Main Feedwater System is not available. The EFS is used, additionally, to supply feedwater to the steam l
generators during startup, shutdown and layup operations. When all three i
steam generators are intact, the system is designed to deliver a feedwater
(
flow of 190 gpm per steam generator or 570 gpm total.
l The two motor driven pumps are redundant to the turbine driven pump, therefore, j
loss of one motor driven pump would be equivalent to loss of redundancy in the system.

7.
Corrective Action New air deflectors were ordered for the emergency feedwater pump motor 1B.
The air deflectors were shipped the week of April 6-10, and we expect the air deflectors to be installed within two weeks of receiving.
The motor IB has not been run but for a brief time and there is no damage to the motor.
There are only two General Electric air cooled motors at the Sunser Nuclear Plant of the type being reported. The A motor had air deflectors and the B motor did not.
There are no other motors of the same type at Summ r Nuclear Plant.

Advice to Purchasers or Licensees To perform complete inspection of all parts and perform complete acceptance tests on equipment.
