Dear Ms. Rogers:

Da@'our p W

N information on nuclear power plants ilw$7a sid:i,14! questing This is in response to your letter of ch 1.f f

hfa that have been shut down.

Only one nuclear electric pcwer plant in California has been indefinitely shut down, the Pacific Gas & Electric Company's Humboldt Bay Unit 3.

This facility, a 65 megawatt electric power plant, went into operation in August 1963 and operated until July 1976, when it was shut down for refueling and while new seismic and geologic studies of the site were performed.

Based on the results of those studies, the NRC staff stated in August 1977 that it would oppose PG&E's application to restart the plant.

In December 1980, the company announced it was withdrawing its 6

application for restart and would consider other alternatives, including decommissioning.

The General Electric Test Reactor, located at the Vallecitos Laboratory near Pleasanton, is not a power reactor, but it has been shut down in October 1977 as a result of new seismic infor-mation about the site developed by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Public hearings on the company's application to restart the plant are expected to be held in May.

Several other research and

~

test reactors in California have been shut down over the years, primarily for financial reasons or because they had completed their research and test programs.

Additional public hearings on the Diablo Canyon facility are tentatively scheduled to begin in May in San Luis Obispo.

No firm schedule or location has been established.

I will forward a copy of your letter to the Docketing and Service Section at our Headquarters in Washington and ask that you be notified when any Notice of Hearing is issued.

I hope this information is helpful.
