Subject:

Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Fover Plant Units Nos. 1 & 2, Dockets Nos. 50-317 & 50-318 Operational Testing of the Automatic Halon 1301 Total Flooding Fire Sunuression System Gentlemen:

As reported to your Mr. E. L. Conner, Jr. on March 16, 1981, an operational test was performed on March 15, to verify design and installation of the automatic Halon 1301 Total Flooding Fire Suppression System for Unit No. 1 cable spreading room. Preoperational tests vere performed on March 13 in preparation for the test which verified that control circuitry for detection, release, supervision alarm, and control vere functional. During the operational acceptance test, design concentrations ver,e attained but deteriorated rapidly, both in the room and in the Cable Chase I.C.

Investigation has revealed that the ventilation damper control was in error so that interlocking control viring was routed to the vrong damper. Thus, when the Halon system was actuated, the Halon was immediately evacuated from the room.

The interlocking control viring is nov being rerouted to tha proper damper. In addition, we are ce itinuing verification of the gas tightness of the rooms to insure there are no other significant leaks.

Following these activities, a second operational acceptance test vill be scheduled at the earliest opportunity when testing personnel, insurance authorities _ and insurance contractors can be assembJ ed at the site; we expect this to occur by May h, assuming a cmall number of leaks are found to need repair.. In the interim, the system has been placed in service and upon alarm of-a fire in the room, the ventilation vould be secured manually by the control room operator.
