High-Energy Line Break Analysis (HELBA) Pipe Whip Restraint Designs INTERIM REPORT 3 DATE:

March 16, 1981 PROJECT:

Consumers Power Company

-Midland Plant Units I and 2 Bechtel Job 7220 Introduction This reports the current status of and actions taken on MCAR 40 since l

Interim Report 2.

Status of Actions 1.

Pipe-whip restraint design criteria and procedures have been developed for the MCAR 40 reanalysis effort.

Preliminary results have indicated.that modifications to restraint and embedment de-signs and locations will be required.

As results are finalized, design codifications will be made as necessary.

2.

.MCAR 40 recommended a chief engineer's revies of the HELBA group assumptions and work processes to determine whether other similar

. potential problems exist.. Based on review by the Bechtel chief nuclear engineer, this action'is considered complete.

No other areas were identified as having similar potential problems.

Corrective Actions The following corrective actions have been provided to preclude the recurrence of problems of this type.-

1.

Project. coordination meetings to discuss and to resolve interdis-ciplinary concerns have been held-weekly with few exceptions. These meetings will continue on a periodic basis until they are considered unnecessary.

2.

Biweekly HELBA group training' sessions have been conducted.

3.-

Bechtel Thermal Power Organization (TPO) Design Guide for Pipe Break Protection is being utilized by the HELBA group as supple-mental explanatory material for clearer understanding of the -

HELBA criteria contained in the FSAR'and its refc enced documents.

The guide is mandatory reading for the 'HELBA group engineers.
